What is Periodontology?
Periodontology is the dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum diseases and the supporting bone structures of the teeth.
Common conditions treated include:
• Gingivitis (gum inflammation)
• Periodontitis (advanced gum disease with bone loss)
• Gum recession
• Peri-implantitis (infections around dental implants)
The Treatment Process
Periodontal therapy is tailored to the severity of gum disease using professional diagnostic and treatment methods.
Step-by-Step:
1. Assessment & Diagnosis
• Gum pockets are measured, X-rays are taken, and bone loss is evaluated.
2. Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
• Removal of plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins from below the gumline.
3. Medication or Laser Therapy
• In some cases, antibiotic gels or laser treatment is used to reduce inflammation.
4. Surgical Intervention (if needed)
• Flap surgery, bone grafts, or tissue regeneration may be required in advanced cases.
